 Over the next twenty years or so, there will be an unprecedented amount of development throughout North Kent from the Dartford Crossing to the Isle of Sheppey and we want to ensure that as many local businesses have the chance to profit from the opportunities on offer. Not just local businesses but local communities as well. The regeneration of North Kent has to be based on long-term partnerships between the public sector and private companies; central government and local authorities; major contractors and local suppliers and between employers and local jobseekers. Between now and 2011, jobs in construction are expected to increase by 12% in the South East - over 13,000 new recruits each year! It doesn’t need me to tell you how this will impact on the already overstretched skills base. You only have to pick up a copy of Construction News each week and you’ll see features and articles telling us about how the industry is crying out for skilled workers and it’s having to rely too heavily on Eastern European workers.
North Kent Construction Skills (NoKCS), is particularly concerned about providing the skills needed to underpin the regeneration across North Kent. The project aspires to bridge the skills gap and ensure that the local people have every opportunity to share in the benefits that a buoyant, competitive and sustainable construction sector will bring. The project has devised a scheme – ‘Present a Pledge’ - where companies across Kent can make a difference by working collectively to bridge the skills gap. On receipt of your pledge(s) NoKCS or one of our partners will contact you to talk about putting your pledge(s) in to action.
