NoKCS negotiated with Jascom, a Medway electrical installation company, to employ a mature apprentice female in her last year of training from Mid Kent College. NoKCS managed to link this offer to another employment initiative, ‘Women in Construction’, a European programme led by Amicus Horizon and by so doing gained the employer a grant.
The apprentice, who said that trying to find an employer was very difficult, was impressed by NoKCS’ intervention on her behalf. Women represent a very small proportion of the workforce in construction; to turn that around we need more employers like Jascom prepared to make a positive move in the hope that others will follow. |
