NoKCS brought together partners from both the public and private sector to hold a mini expo exclusively for school children. The programme, designed by Denne, illustrated how students placed sustainability at the core of their learning programmes. Medway Council helped fund the exciting programme which was showcased at the Mini Expo which ran in parallel at the Construction Expo 08. Visionary designer, Wayne Hemingway and Pooran Desai, Technical Director of One Planet Living and Co-Founder of BioRegional, judged the students’ work on the day. Others who helped the students with their projects include E.C Harris, leading international consultancy in the construction sector, Trevor Tooth, two times Bronze Winner at the Chelsea Flower Show, and Simon Palmer, CEO of The Homes Factory and a local Dartford-based company specialising in timber framing.
Schools that participated along with their outline projects were:
- Christ Church CE High School, Ashford – project
management of an environmental garden - St John’s, Gravesend – renewable energy
- New Brompton College, Medway – sustainable construction technology for housing
- Medway Community College, Medway – sustainable approaches to Health & Safety
- Minster College, Isle of Sheppey – solar panels
- Sittingbourne Community College, Sittingbourne – wind generated energy
Iain Wright MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Communities and Local Government, was present when Christchurch School kicked off their environmental garden project. The Minister was very excited to see young people working so closely with the industry. Nicholas Fowler, Business Development Manager for Denne, said that he was delighted that the company was able to assist young people to devise and implement real projects with mentors from the industry. The Mini Expo, he added, will be an excellent showcase to show off such talented young people. |
